<p>You&#8217;ve heard the term &#8216;fair trade&#8217; but do you know what it means? Organic food expert and environmentalist Anna Lappe explains why she believes it&#8217;s important to buy fair trade coffee, and how to find it.</p>
<p>How to buy fair trade coffee</p>
<p>What is fair trade coffee?<br />
* Basically, fair trade means the farmer who produced the product got a fair price for it. This is very important for the livelihood of coffee farmers. Millions of coffee farmers can barely feed their families because they get almost no money for their <a href="http://www.coffeesandcream.com" target=_self>coffee beans</a> unless its fair trade. </p>
<p>* How do you find it? Look for the black and white fair trade logo which is marked on all fair trade coffee and fair trade coffee beans at every Starbucks, although you may have to ask for it. </p>
<p>* Supermarkets are beginning to carry it as well, in many cases. If you dont find it, ask your grocer for it. Sometimes it just takes some customer requests.</p>
<p>Every time you buy a fair trade coffee beans you can feel good knowing that you&#8217;re contributing to farming communities around the planet.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/gCYzhJicpYM/2.jpg" align="left">Two Northern Michigan University (NMU) students &#8211; Lisa McCarthy of Greenville, WI and Sarah Swanson of Rapid River, MI &#8211; are giving presentations across the Upper Peninsula on their recent Lutheran World Relief trip to Nicaragua during which they met with coffee farmers and learned about fair trade.<br />
This is the first of several excerpts from their presentation.<br />
In part three, the students describe how the women of Nicaragua are treated with respect, the importance of families and the environmental protection efforts of one Nicaraguas organic farmers.<br />
The NMU students among 13 Americans on Lutheran World Relief Study Tour entitled NICARAGUA: Pour Justice to the Brim from January 5-12, 2009<br />
The group visited the capitol of Managua, and the cities/villages of Matagalpa, Jinotega and La Reyna.<br />
Fair trade ensures fair wages, and protects women&#8217;s rights and human rights plus fights poverty.<br />
Arriving at the peak of the coffee harvest, the students visited many aspects of the industry including dry mills, wet mills and coffee cooperatives.<br />
They spoke on January 13, 2008 to a group at the St. Mark&#8217;s Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Marquette, MI.</p>

<p>Sustainable Harvest is a green specialty coffee importer with a unique mission to link small holder growers to better paying markets using a concept it created called &#8220;Relationship Coffee.&#8221; </p>
<p>Sustainable Harvest was the first importer to focus exclusively on organic, shade-grown, and fair trade <a href="http://www.coffeesandcream.com" target=_self>specialty coffee</a>s.  The Specialty Coffee Association of America awarded Sustainable Harvest the 2006 Sustainability Award for the creation and development of the idea of &#8220;Relationship Coffee&#8221;, for this new business model which has helped thousands of small coffee farmers and communities. </p>

<p>Sustainable Harvest hopes to set an example for how a small business can create sustainable systems that build lasting markets for coffee farmers around the globe.  </p>
<p>Relationship Coffee is built upon a foundation of transparency, full traceability, trade credit, total quality, and training.  </p>
<p>Sustainable Harvest invests about half of what it earns as a coffee importer to train small-holder coffee growers and coffee cooperatives to improve their quality and access higher paying markets.  It does this through five overseas  farmer-training offices in Africa, South America, Central America and Mexico &#8211; all of which are devoted to farmer training and coffee support services. </p>
<p>As one of the fastest growing specialty coffee importers, the company sources from the top organic and fair trade farms from around the world. The company sells these coffees to USA, Canadian and Japanese coffee roasters and retailers, and helps them tell the story behind the beans. </p>
