Coffee is an important beverage to many cultures around the world for ritualistic and culinary reasons. This revered drink originates in a bean from a bush two basic categories of this drink are Arabica and Robusta. This powerful drink and the bean used to make it is the world’s seventh largest crop, and can be a very expensive commodity. Today most of the beans that are produced are grown in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa in recent years, fair trade coffee has become trendy, as many activists contend that growers do not see the economic value associated with the coffee trade.

Ripe coffee beans cannot be consumed raw; they must be dried, roasted, then ground and brewed with hot water to make the drink we call coffee. There are many ways to have coffee some of them are:

Espresso: This is a strong coffee that is made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee beans and now is very popular.
Irish coffee: A sweetened coffee that has a shot of whiskey in it and is topped with cream.
Fresh roasted toasted almond flavored coffee.
Fresh roasted Chocolate Mint flavored coffee
Hazelnut

Just to name a few the possibilities are endless you can have your coffee in any strength and flavor just by using any of the various coffee syrups that are now available.

Coffee’s effects on our health is unclear, as some studies suggest coffee in moderation may be good for you, while others say it has a negative effects on health its caffeine content makes it a controversial beverage.

I’m particular about coffee, preferring to drink only what I’ve made myself I drink a goodly amount of coffee – between half a pot and a full pot a day. I don’t get headaches if I miss a day, and I can drink a double espresso at night and still fall asleep so I am not sure what the big controversy is what I do know is controversy or not Starbucks is the biggest seller of coffee and they sell a lot of coffee.

You’ve heard the term ‘fair trade’ but do you know what it means? Organic food expert and environmentalist Anna Lappe explains why she believes it’s important to buy fair trade coffee, and how to find it.

How to buy fair trade coffee

What is fair trade coffee?
* Basically, fair trade means the farmer who produced the product got a fair price for it. This is very important for the livelihood of coffee farmers. Millions of coffee farmers can barely feed their families because they get almost no money for their coffee beans unless its fair trade.

* How do you find it? Look for the black and white fair trade logo which is marked on all fair trade coffee and fair trade coffee beans at every Starbucks, although you may have to ask for it.

* Supermarkets are beginning to carry it as well, in many cases. If you dont find it, ask your grocer for it. Sometimes it just takes some customer requests.

Every time you buy a fair trade coffee beans you can feel good knowing that you’re contributing to farming communities around the planet.

Is it morally unsound to not buy free trade coffee?

My roommate was recently basically telling me I was a terrible person for not buying free trade coffee. First of all, I am a college student and can’t afford free trade coffee. Second of all, I have never tasted free trade coffee that was particularly good. So, as a Christian, is it wrong of me to not put forth the extra money and buy free trade? Or is it right for me to live within my means and buy the cheaper coffee that I enjoy more?

I don’t answer to any religion as to whether what I do is right or wrong. That being said. From this point on I am going to buy Fair Trade Coffee. Why? Because after being reminded by people like JAICEE what children and others go through to get us this cheap coffee, I felt guilty that I was doing exactly what he said, putting my head in the sand and making the excuse that it was much more expensive than the brand I buy. He is right in everything he states, there to many of us putting our heads in the sand and making excuses.

Our decisions should not be made in accordance to how a particular religion teaches their beliefs. It should be according to how we, ourselves feel when we know that we should be doing more to help the starving and poor people of this world. Otherwise it will never change.

What is special about Tim Horton’s coffee? My co-workers pay $1.50 for it , when we have free coffee at work?

Can you explain why so many people ONLY drink Tim Horton’s coffee? Our coffee at work (and at home) is fresh and good quality, and so much cheaper! I know people who will drive an extra 10 miles out of their way to pick up a Tim’s on the way to work, when there is free good coffee at work.

I can’t notice any difference in taste. Am I missing something? Is it just a habit, or what?
I was curious after two people mentioned methaqualone, so I did a search. Here’s one quote: "Frequent use of methaqualone results in rather rapid tolerance. Users have to increase their dose to achieve the original high, and overdoses of methaqualone can often be fatal.

I think the idea of methaqualone in coffee might be an urban myth? At least, I hope so!

muffinman, I’m Canadian. Sorry I can’t answer your questions about southern things. Did you know that Tim Horton’s is now owned by Wendy’s (a US corporation)? I’m not attacking Canadian icons; anyway, coffee is not exactly a Canadian-grown commodity.

Actually, you really shouldn’t buy Tim’s. The coffee that Tim Horton’s buys (the beans) is not produced in a fair-trade manner. For that matter, their coffee is amongst the WORST for fair-trade violations.

Places that have fair trade, such as J.J. Bean in Vancouver, offer fair-market prices to the farmers that grow their beans.
