“they’ll last a long time!”
Callin’ BS on that one. The whole point of roasting at home is that the beans taste best within 3 days. Most you’d want to stretch that is 10.
…she also completely blew past the fact that the beans need to rest for 12-24 hours after roasting to release CO2.
Okay, Mark…thanks …
Okay, Mark…thanks for the info about the Tanzania & peaberry beans. I’ll try them. I also like cappuccinos. BTW, I see pianoman in your name. I own about 8 synths, drum machines, midi keyboards, amps, & a couple of guitars. All but the guitars are in storage. I don’t play much now. I was in a band 12 yrs ago but it didn’t last. My name Metaspherz is a name I used for my solo project. I once had50 tunes on many websites in 1999. A few tunes survive today. I sold 1 tune to a news station.
Metaspherz, the …
Metaspherz, the only “coffee” I drink is a cappuccino made with my Rancilio Silvia…I don’t enjoy “normal” coffee too much. I’ve never purchased Kona beans. I buy the green beans from the North Shore of Oahu. I never tried Kona or Kauaii beans. I know that the company which produces the beans here on Oahu sells their peaberry beans to Nieman-Marcus. I bought a 100-lb sack for about $640 and sold half to a friend. I still have quite a bit. I mix with peaberry coffee from Tanzania.
Mark….Roast your …
Mark….Roast your beans stovetop in a pan. My 1st dozen batches were done that way. Very good flavor too. Good luck finding the poppers. Only 1 local Walgreens sold them.
I received 5 pounds of beans from u-roast-em on Jan 4th so I’m good to go this month, but next month I want to order some Hawaiian beans direct or from Sweet Maria’s. Anyway, other than Kona do you like the Kauai beans? Kona’s are $20 a pound but the Kauai’s are about $6.50. So, which do you prefer? I can buy more Kauai.
Metaspherz, sounds …
Metaspherz, sounds like you got a good deal on those machines…I doubt if the Walgreens on Oahu sell them, but I’ll have to check. The stiring definitely helps to get an even roast. With the “chefmate” or the “toastmaster 6203″ (same machine) I could roast 1/2 cut at a time…which when roasted yielded a full cup. Haven’t been drinking my normal double shot cappuccino in the morning because we’re out of roasted beans…can’t wait for the new toastmaster machines to come in the mail.
Hey, Mark…Just …
Hey, Mark…Just bought a $10 Kitchen Gourmet air popper from Walgreens. I roasted two 2 1/2 ounce batches of Ethiopian Yigacheffe & Columbian Supremo. It’s a small 1200 watt unit but it roasts the beans to full city in about 3 1/2 minutes flat. That’s about a minute faster than usual for my old Toastmaster. The beans didn’t circulate as fast could be the reason. I stirred often with a wooden spoon handle for an even roast. For that price I’m going to buy another (or 2) for backup.
Thanks! I’ll check …
Thanks! I’ll check Shopzeus. Could always use a backup air popper. Use one while the other is cooling down, like you said.
And, btw, you said that you reside in Hawaii. Sweet. I’m in Michigan. It’s like 20F degrees out & falling. My garage isn’t heated. I must roast in an enclosed porch (unheated too, but about 25 degrees warmer) or in the kitchen.
Also, I wanted a R. Silvia but I’m retired on a fixed income. Settled for the Breville 800esxl & Cuisinart burr grinder. So, I’m jealous.
Ya know, it’s …
Ya know, it’s always said that one should let the fresh-roasted beans should stand open for a day before storing them allowing the C02 to escape. I’ve usually not waited at all and find really no difference. Never noticed that the coffee came out carbonated….
Agreed. Why break …
Agreed. Why break the bank to get a good roast? I just finished an espresso with beans that were less than 24 hrs degassed. I normally wait for 3 days unless I use a French Press but I felt like a kid Christmas morning & couldn’t wait to sample my ‘new’ beans. The flavor was milder & brighter for my tastes but deliciious. Not sure if the stove top roasting vs air popper made a difference or if it’s the premature brewing. Other factors too, I’m sure. But the search is on for a new roaster.
Oh, by the way, I …
Oh, by the way, I found the Toastmaster on sale somewhere in the internet for $10 each….so bought 2 and had to pay $24 for shipping to Hawaii….but was still cheaper than anywhere else. I bought through Amazon but the supplier was SHOPZEUS.
I wish i could use …
I wish i could use my old Toastmaster “Chefmate” popcorn popper as a cool down machine, but it died….I mean really died…doesn’t blow hot or cold air anymore. I order Tanzanian peaberry from the Delaware City Coffee Company, and buy green beans grown on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii….use 1/2 of each or a 1/3 of each if I combine in a washed decaffeinated. I can’t get such a good cappuccino from the coffee shops! I have the Rancillio Silvia and Rocky.
Funny thing, Mark.. …
Funny thing, Mark… My $2 Toastmaster just died yesterday. I could hardly wait to roast some Burundi Bwayi ‘washed’ & Brazil Serra Negra that just arrived, both new to me. Turned on the popper, it just blew cold air. Sad, yes, but I figure I’ll use it as a cool down unit & NOT junk it as was my 1st intent. I roasted 4 beautiful 5 oz. batches with a small SS pot, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Thermometer read 350 – 375F. 9 mins. per batch. Chaff was everywhere! I miss the air popper!
Target has …
Target has disappointed me by no longer offering the “Toastmaster 6203″ under the “Chefmate” brand…. I guess they weren’t good popcorn poppers even though they were perfect for coffee beans. There were lots of very negative reviews written about the Toastmaster 6203 being an awful popcorn popper. I think my new ones will give considerably better service than the 1st single one I bought because by using 2 of them, I’ll be spreading out the use and not overheading them so frequently.
All of these …
All of these machines are so expensive,I just think I’ll continue too use the popcorn poppers. However, after about 10 months, my Chefmate popcorn popper from Target died…but it was getting quite a bit of use. My wife used it too to roast her beans for normal coffee and I for cappuccino. I ordered two of the “Poplite” popcorn poppers that were only $15 each on sale…but they DON’T work…air shoots from the bottom. Have ordered 2 of the Toastmaster 6203…like the one from target.
Me too, Mark…but …
Me too, Mark…but I get tired of the almost daily roasting that has to be done to keep up with demand. I’ve never done more than 3 batches a day. I like to keep at least a weeks worth of beans in storage. If I miss 1 or 2 days roasting my reserves get low & I start to panic. My $2 Good Will purchase has served me well for the last 6 months with just a few mods, but I’m now looking to upgrade to something with more volume, say half a pound. Have you upgraded or do you still use an air popper?
Your machine can …
Your machine can take 1 cup of green beans. My Chefmate popcorn popper costing $16 from target can roast 1/2 cup of green beans in 5.5 minutes producing a beautiful dark-brown roasts. I LOVE IT, and it was cheap!
