Organic Coffee: Does it Taste Any Better?
Feb 27th, 2010 by Coffee Lover
Traditional coffee like Folders and the popular Spanish brand Nescafe have maintained that familiar, consistent great taste over the years. Despite pesticides and fertilizers harvested in the large, commercial coffee plantations they grow on, it manages to suit an average person’s tastes as evident by its sales. In justifying the high prices for Organic coffee, many people point to its tastes as one of the main reasons. Does Organic coffee taste better than traditional coffee?
To begin, organic coffee tastes better than traditional coffee because of the growing methods farmers use. Factors that weigh heavily with improved taste include shade grown and organic farming methods that are in force today that promote healthier soil, clean water, and habitats for birds that provide pest control. As an added bonus, organic coffee receives a taste boost if it is high-grown. Organic coffee under shade trees are the definition of ‘premium’ in that fewer coffee cherries are produces unlike traditional coffee that grow under the sun. Because of this, organic coffee cherries grow slower and finer, and the difference is passed on to your I Love New York mug.
Another reason why organic coffee tastes better is because of the incentives farmers receive for producing it. With an average of 15 cents more per pound, producers are more inclined to keep their trees in top shape and harvest them better. Organic coffee producers also place a higher emphasis on harvesting, many of which is done by hand to assure the best beans are processed. This is a must, considering coffee trees have cherries going through different development cycles. The harvesting process also separates regular beans from the finer ones. All in all, because of the more intricate care placed with growing organic coffee, taste is improved tenfold.

Why did Starbucks ruin coffee?
Coffee should taste like coffee, why is everything there overly sweetened and full of thickeners and fat? Sure it maybe good, but its very unheathy, and I think its just disgusting. What’s wrong with a good cup of fair trade organic coffee?
fyi…..i’ve been working for an independent shop for 2 years….never been to starbucks…..i’m proud to be a barista, but whats wrong with actual bean juice?
Where are all the rich business like folk with laptops and palm pilots going to hang out? lol

I think it’s what makes Starbucks so good. It doesn’t have to taste like coffee.Every sotore has its own thing. So don’t bother them.

They think the "traditional" coffee is boring, so this is how the make there business. They make several different kinds of fattened coffee, and different tasting coffee. Some people like different things.

Well, Starbucks coffee is tailored to the tastes of those who enjoy those "overly sweetened, full of thickeners and fat" concoctions. And there are millions of those people! If you don’t like it, you don’t have to buy it.

I got a GREAT idea for you – DON’T GO TO STARBUCKS if you don’t like it! Personally, I love their fancy drinks.

I dont drink coffee at all actually, but I absolutley love starbucks – I suppose it’s an aqquired taste though? I agree that the prices can sometimes be a little high, but it’s all marketing and I’m sure for coffee lovers a good cup of organic coffee would be nice. However, I’m gonna stick with my starbucks, they have great tasting food and drinks and if you dont like it then dont go.

haha, that’s hilarious. I went for a coffee with a friend for lunch today. And Starbucks is her spot…. we got there and I didn’t not what to get. So, I asked what the barrister suggested. She started rattling off, and finally I cut her off and asked for "coffee flavoured coffee". What happened to a good cup of java?

I like their coffee… It is weird how they don’t serve just regular coffee but than it wouldn’t be starbucks. Starbucks is really popular and if people like the stuff inside the coffee, they’re just gonna keep on buying it and Starbucks is gonna keep on making money.

Because in America, people don’t like organic coffee, they like sweet, warm creamy, sugary coffee. And once that get hooked on it, it’s an addiction. You can’t blame Starbuck’s because they’re just trying to make money. Blame all the fat Americans who buy the overly sweetened coffee.

You are absolutely right! "Bean juice" (I love that), done well from the plant to the cup, is one of the best tasting beverages you can drink.
Those who know coffee, and can appreciate all of its aromas, and flavor notes can also appreciate what a real barista (like yourself) can do with a coffee maker, or better yet, an espresso machine.
I find the people who go to S-bucks are the people who like hot coco, not coffee.
That’s OK, they can drink the coffee from the crappy beans, and leave the good beans from all of the origins to the rest of us who know what we like, and we like coffee.

if you’ve never even tried starbucks coffee how can you be so critical of them?? Yes, they are over charging for coffee that some would say is less than average, but i think it’s up to the coffee drinker. I know its pretty hard work being a barista, so keep it up, but dont judge people because they dont like organic.

I was actually on the fence about organic products in general until recently. A friend of mine at work brought in a gallon of organic milk and left it in our fridge. So…when I needed some milk for my lunch I was forced to BORROW some of his. I could not believe how much better it tasted. It was so clean and did not leave a filmy taste in my mouth. Since then I have been an organic convert, with coffee being one of my favorite products. So, YES, there is a huge difference!!
